Antonia Cruz

The objects of reflection in my work are the images; Images that I captured, collect, classify and dismounted to return to form them into new arrangements or alternative compositions.

I use fragments from diverse sources, such as photographic archives, slides of landscape photographs, Chilean Art History Paintings and bodies donated to anatomy departments. I put together the images by means of a photographic registry, to then mount them together with a software, alter their transparency, and mold them together as to shape a new image. I am interested in the multiple intersections between history and creation, which, necessary to the photographic discipline, has been put in doubt as to elaborate it’s own historical fiction.

I understand the process of my work as a formal analysis, a detailed, or even anatomical study comprehended as the dismembering and absolute separation of body parts. My viewpoint, through the photographic lense, is a forensic viewpoint, because it embodies an analytic view, with an outcome which always relates as a remaining, as a dead fragment to the whole it once belonged to. It isolates the body from its natural processes as to be studied; separates its fundamental components to be best observed. This superposition and mismatch, is precisely an operation which concerns segmentation and separation. The potency of presentation overflows representation.

Curriculum

In 2009 she received her Bachelor degree in Visual Arts from the Finis Terrae University, Santiago, Chile. During 2007 and 2008 she attended the Critique Workshop imparted by Eugenio Dittborn, Santiago, Chile. In 2010 she studied photography with Enrique Zamudio, within the framework of the Graduate Program in Photography at the Finis Terrae University, Santiago, Chile. During 2011 she was educated in Anatomical Techniques and Conservation Methods, alongside Miguel Soto in the Morphology Pro- gram at the University of Chile Medicine Faculty, Santiago, Chile. She has participated in artist residencies as The Cleveland Foundation International Artist-in-Residence Program, Cleveland Print Room, Cleveland, United States, 2015; Glogauair Artist Residence Program, Berlin, Germany, 2012.
